It really depends on the school and the division of the school's team if you're talking about MCPS.

I was this outlier over 30 years ago at a FCPS HS. Cheerleaders quit to join poms. All had dance and or gymnastics backgrounds.

There were two tryout sessions with first cuts - over 100 girls vied for 36 spots. Pro cheerleader included in panel of judges to include college dance team captains. Hard core!

My daughter is a Pom. She did very little dancing prior to making the team and she almost didn’t - she was given a trial and was able to learn what she needed. She is the only one on her team that hasn’t been taking competitive dancing for years.

Are there schools with Pom teams, as opposed to dance and cheer teams? Or is this an activity separate from school?

Yes. The kids who make Poms have often taken dance since they were a lot younger. It is a hard team to make.

I don't have a kid in poms, but I'm guessing yes. A lot of those girls have been dancing for years, and know the "lingo" and also how to pick up steps first taught to them. How old is your kid? Can you get them 2 months of lessons before tryouts to see how quickly she could get some training?

Just wondering. Thanks.
