Will vertical go out of style quickly?

I think 3rd photo is by far the most classic and unfussy of the three. In my opinion, it will age best. All the herringbone, stacked, zellig, etc. come and go but it's hard to argue with the classic white subway tile like in 3rd photo.

Subway tiles have been around forever. Agree with PP that installing them vertically or herringbone or something will definitely read more trendy than basic brick pattern.

I do think you can change up the size if you want a slight twist - 6x12 instead of 3x6, maybe?

Agree. Gray paint in every room will look dated, modern farmhouse style will look dated, but subway tile is a classic that can stand the test of time. In the brick configuration too. (I have it in vertical stacks and the traditional pattern and I’m already sick of those stacks, as an aside. But where I sparingly used herringbone, I like, and IMO herringbone is going to stand the test of time). But at the end of the day, you should do what you like!

I agree, but am struggling a bit to find something else I like. My favorite inspiration photos all seem to read slightly industrial or farmhouse or California casual (which really doesn't fit with a mid-Atlantic cape cod). I hate the ultra-dark, saturated colors that seem to be trending right now.

Zellige is the glass mosaic tile of right now.

You should do what you like and want to look at. I like square ceramic, but if you like herringbone, do herringbone! I do feel like brick-style subway tile is way overdone and would prefer stacked or vertical (which is what we're planning in our kitchen backsplash). But again, it's your house. Every trend will die, some faster than others. Pick which ones you like.

Are you referring to the second picture? If so, I agree but I think the first pic looks very clean. I assumed both were zellige (just different colors) but there was no identifying info with the photo so can't say for sure. If we went with this look, I'd definitely want the color in pic #1 over #2.

Yes, the second picture. I don't like the first picture either, but because it looks plasticky and the particular texture they achieved (nothing reminiscent of a natural material, which at least the second picture has going for it) feels like a very shortlived fad. But I agree it looks clean.

This is what we did too. Mosaic on the floor, 12x24 on the walls.

For me, subway tiles are a bit over done in the last decade, but classic subway tiles are so classic that they will not date. They've kept coming around again on a regular cycle for 100 years. Vertical and herringbone subway is trendy.

Square tiles are not so much '80s, or not just '80s, but also 100% period-correct for the '20s-30s and also the '50s.

Zellige, otoh, is definitely a trend of the moment and will date your bathroom precisely. It may not be a look you will personally tire of, but right now it's new(ish) and VERY trendy the last few years, so it doesn't qualify as timeless if that's a concern.

We're getting ready to start a major bathroom remodel and I'm seeing in a number of places that rectangular (subway) tile is on its way out--at least in its more traditional, brick-style placement. Supposedly, the 80's style square tiles are making a resurgence. Would you remodel a bathroom right now with rectangular tile? If we did it, we most likely would stick with the traditional installation but we're strongly considering white zellige tile (or a zellige look-alike) to add some texture and movement. Our house is a 40's-era cape cod, so I'm not sure a more modern, stacked or vertical placement would feel right. We may try a herringbone pattern on the floor similar to the first photo below, which I love. Option two would be to go with a square zellige, which would probably feel a little more current. Option three would be to stick with a more traditional subway a la photo number three, which I also like--but again, worry about investing in a dying trend. I don't think I'm adventurous enough try a square ceramic. Any thoughts?
