I’m so confused. So do kids need 2 or 3 years of world language? Do they all have to be taken in HS? Why are the MS course bulletins still showing HS credit for taking world language in grades 6, 7, and 8?

I can’t even tell if the FL is required anymore. They mentioned Program Completer options of which 2 years of the same foreign language seemed to be one options. That said the traditional math ( Alg & Geometry), language classes, and Technology from MS still counted for HS credit.

The change was 2 years of the SAME language. If they took the two years in MS it stills counts, assuming they passed. That said, colleges would like to see some foreign language taken in HS. There is some flexibility on whether it needs to be continuous progression from MS or more than 2yrs if started in Hs.

My son goes to a competitive school and only took 2.5 years of Spanish. He had many other strengths. While 4 years is typical, there is some flexibility.

ah.. so from an MCPS graduation requirement, it's only two years of FL, but from a competitive college "requirement", they want to see 4 yrs of the same language.

DC in MS said MCPS changed the FL requirement such that you now have to have 4 years of the same FL, that if you switch mid year, you have to take additional FL classes to makeup for the switch.

Example
Kid takes Spanish A, B and 2 in MS, then 3 in freshman year - 3 years
Kid wants to take Latin in Sophmore year - 1 yr

That totals 4 years of FL.

My understanding is that you have to take up to 4 years (level A/B, 2, 3, 4) of FL, but I thought you could take a different FL at some point. There are some kids in DC's Spanish 2B class who started out taking French but then switched to Spanish.

But now, DC says MCPS changed it such that you must take the same FL all four years.

But according to MCPS grad requirements, starting from class of 2025 (DC is class of 2026), it says

"2 credits in the same world language AND 2 credits in elective courses"

Anyone know for sure? Of course, I will ask MCPS, but DC said this is what the counselor told them in class when scheduling HS courses. I don't want to ask the same counselor who said this. Or maybe DC misheard, but DC said they asked other kids in the class if this is what they heard, and they all said yes.
