The fact someone is 'unaffiliated' doesn't mean they are centrist.

The vast majority of MoCo residents support Democratic candidates. Why would they not want elected officials who reflect their ideological beliefs.

That’s the point though… they should be allowed to vote

Huge difference between traditional Democrats and the progressives.

+1 There’s a spectrum within the Democratic Party. Not sure why that needs to be pointed out. Bernie had only 1/3 of the vote in 2016 and 1/6 in 2020. We shouldn’t be ruled by Bernie clones.

Same here. I'm not going to pretend to be a Democrat just for primary voting purposes. I've had no party affiliation all along and I plan to stay that way.

We're not moving for a while as our kids are in school (private, after MCPS many failures) and we don't want to uproot them and their friends networks.

Some of the best initiatives in MoCo have been ballot questions, like term limits on county exec and county council; limits on tax increases, and repealing the ambulance tax.

It's too bad we can't have a referendum to make primary elections open (not party-specfic) like they do in more than 20 other states. Here we are supporting candidates in the primary with our tax dollars (due to MoCo's public financing of candidates), but we have no ability to vote for/against those candidates.

I agree that open primaries are the key to balancing the parties, and not just at the county level. I think the partisan primary system drives both parties towards extremism. How can we get open praries?

psa: changing voter registration in MoCo is super easy.

Holding onto your political party is admirable, but it's not going to help MoCo swing to the center.

If you care more about your party than having moderate leaders, then all that is going to do is keep the extremist leftist in power.

extremists of any kind is bad for the country and the county.

We need a moderate. It's easier to do this in the local election.

We will never get a R in the county council or Executive. Let's not pretend that this could happen.

BUT...we can get a moderate Democrat.

Register as a Dem and vote for a moderate. That's our best option and the path forward. There are a lot of moderate liberals here who would support a moderate. You may be a lifelong, card carrying R, but if you don't want uber progressive policiees

To my moderate liberal neighbors (my spouse is one), we need a moderate in the county. Not all Rs are Trumpsters, and a lot of Independents are actually moderate Rs and Dems.

This is the way we swing MoCo back to the middle. I wish we could do this on a national level.
