I think it’s hard to determine if others are doing the same without identifying schools. I believe you are talking about Sidwell. But if not, Sidwell is requiring kids to eat lunch outside.

One is - lower school. School also has windows open all day and now kids wear hats, boots, and coats all day, or keep hands in pockets of coasts or hoodies. School also demands you wear $2 a pop disposable k95s daily.
I don’t know how a 5 or 6 yo can even eat in these temps or use their hands. They must just sit there trying to be warm and watch tv.
Other, older kid at another school is inside.
Both are vaxxed. Tested weekly via school.
Agree this is overkill, unnecessary and egregious to be putting kids outside and in low temps on these sub35f or sub 40f days.

btw, this is in a school where every person is vaccinated/teachers and others eligible boosted. About 15 of the school seems to have had covid over the last 2 months (NOT from in school spread). And to be done while distanced.
meanwhile, in lots of other places/regions (and even in local resteraunts) people are eating normally inside at tables. kids in other states don't wear masks at all. Israel and Britan (a couple weeks/months ahead of the DC area) don't have younger kids wear masks at all and I read one is calling for an end to kids' quarentining.
that should say about 15% of the school I think has had covid (in addition to being vaccinated) within the last 2 months

And how did it make them feel to be forced to spend 20 minutes in the cold, eat their lunch huddled by an insufficient heat source "huddled like homeless people living under a bridge"? Now imagine it with no food and no Patagonia parka and ski gloves and no heated shelter to return to after the 20 minutes. Can you imagine?

that is redonk. sorry op. my kids wear one cloth mask and don't eat outside and are allowed to - *gasp* - talk during lunch! school keeps plugging along with zero outbreaks since fall of 2020.

No, it's not "smart" to force young kids to eat lunch outside in temps like this. It's completely absurd. Also, at our school at least, the older kids specifically CANNOT eat in their cars.

Oh man your poor kids. I feel so bad for them. I would kill to be able to afford to send my kids to private school that had better Covid standards than their huge public high school. It’s smart to have them eat outside, although the teacher should also eat outside or go eat in their cars. Although the teachers may have their own little offices, which makes it safer, and they may be working while they eat. Your kid kids can deal. We’re in the middle of a surge.
