Kids are going to drive to after parties instead of taking the party up to the hotel. Way to think this through.

I have no faith in Sidwell "fixing up the gym" unless a motivated parent with good taste gets involved. If you're hiring a designer, isn't that making it "fancy" anyway.

I just don't understand why you can't let the kids feel some lightness for once. Everything has to have some Sidwell cloud over it. Where the F is Bryan Garman on this?

Generally or just with regard to prom? If the former, why do you keep your kid(s) as a student there?

But kids can't go up to hotel rooms if the prom is in the gym

Both approaches are valid. Just pour a lot of money into the on-campus event, hire a designer and event coordinator, and it'll be fine. Great even.

They have the auction in the gym and it's fixed up pretty nicely. I think they can do the same for the prom. What's the reason for the change?

I'm unclear as to what the plan is. If the problem is that the event is too fancy, will the students not wear dresses/tuxes? What will the food be? Will there be monk chanting instead of a band? Maybe will we just have 3 hours of silent reflection.

Plenty of schools have prom in a gym or, like my school, in the “multi-purpose room” aka cafeteria. Fancy doesn’t equal fun. They’ll be okay.

It can be at a hotel without being too expensive. There's no valid reason to change it.

Certain faculty and admins just are consistent killjoys.

What no, homecoming may be school based, but prom is held off campus whether private or public school. And it’s not new, this was the norm back in my dinosaur age.
