There have been other posts like this on the group where someone was hurt or verbally assaulted, posted their sad story online, only to be lectured to by some kid who merely says “don’t call the cops” you should just grin and bear it.

I’d post my annoyance on the groups page, but honestly the mods would probably kick me off for being “rude” or something.


Basically kids were walking around with paintball guns (in the cold snow) shooting things. Paintballs can freeze and really hurt. Also, this is the same neighborhood where kids were lighting leaves on fire under cars, there has been a large increase in car jackings, etc…so when I read posters encouraging victims to just move on and not do anything like tell the police I’m kind of surprised. The kids were on camera.


These are really just childish pranks.

Besides, what does the city provide for these kids to do? Nothing?

The leaves they lit on fire were under cars that then completely burned. You're fine with people committing arson on the transport people rely on? Agree that we can do more to give kids things to do, but saying they're not at fault for destruction of property is reprehensible.

You're right - if you argue too much - the mods will hate you forever. I don't like the tone of the mods lately - like everyone is stupid. With this issue - I see both sides, would not like this to happen to me, but still its paintball and we over police these kids.

I'm not on this group (not on Facebook) but that's how most of the conversations about crime go on Nextdoor as well. Though I do think it's often kind of divided between people who are arguing against police involvement and encouraging empathy (particularly of young people who are committing crimes) and also people who are upset about the crime and take a more law and order approach.

I do wish there were more suggestions from the people who want to keep the police out of it, because obviously we can't just let this continue as is. The car jackings, in particular, are terrifying. Originally a reasoned that we'd never be targeted because we drive an old car that looks beat up. But then I saw that today or yesterday, someone got carjacked in Trinidad with a 2007 Accord. I just don't even know anymore. I have a toddler. How am I supposed to keep him safe?

We definitely need better options that the ones we have now. It can't just be "well it's the city, you have to accept it." No one should accept this kind of violence in their neighborhood. If calling the cops is a bad idea, what the heck are we supposed to do?
