We always pay for my in laws. No, they are not poor, it’s just what his family expects.

My parents often paid when we were in our 20s. My parents are retired now and on a fixed income and I treat them most of the time.

With my in laws we pay often.

My mom is 93, she always pays.

Why should the parents pay? We always pay. I remember when I finally could afford to be the one to pay with my mom and I loved being able to do that for her.

If we are visiting them, we pay. If they are visiting us, they pay. Both sides. We used to do the race to the credit card thing but that has evolved to the new compromise.

Why should the parents pay as a default?

We split. They never pay.

This. Everyone tries to pay in our family. We end up switching off over time.

My dad pays, every time. He insists and I have learned to give in gracefully because it makes him happy.

They are not very tech savvy so when it comes to ordering Amazon prime or takeout I get all that for them and don't let them repay me it's a cute dance.

About even. Neither set of parents has a ton of money but it’s a pride thing I think, they always want to pay.

For DH and I, we feel like it’s a small way to pay them back now that they are living on fixed incomes.

It’s often a fight.

We switch off. No rhyme or reason to it. We never split.

Sometimes we pay, sometimes they pay, sometimes we split. When we were first married, they paid more often, now that we’re in our early 40s, it’s about even. Same for in laws.

Do you split, do they expect you to pay, or vice versa?
