Agree. OP writes like a non-native English speaker and the fact pattern she describes is extraordinarily unlikely to happen in the US (skipping two grades in lower elementary-that is not a thing).

He’s 3 so calm down. And I really doubt your older child has skipped two grades in elementary school. Are you really saying your 7 year old second grader is in a fourth grade class with 9 and 10 year olds?

Good for you for realizing he may need some extra support and services. It definitely sounds like he has a speech delay, and speech therapy will help immensely.
It also sounds like he could also have a general delay. Most kids can recognize several shapes and colors at age 2, so if he is having issues learning or retaining that information, I think you are right to have some concerns. I’m wondering if any of this has been caught at his annual check ups? There is screening just for these tasks, and if he did not know colors or shapes or animal sounds or have many words at age 2 or age 3, I’m surprised he was not flagged for evaluations a year or more ago. Regardless, yes, get him into his pediatrician for a potential referral to a developmental pediatrician and support services. He might just be a little behind I need a little more of a push, but if there is a larger issue, getting ahead of it as much as possible is going to benefit him for sure.
In the meantime, double down efforts to read to him, sing songs, have him watch educational shows are clips, and definitely get a leapfrog or electronic toy if he does well with audio and visual learning and if he is attracted to electronic toys.

Try not to worry. The social/emotional learning is so much more important than learning shapes. Don’t make learning a chore. And, for the love of G— don’t do flash cards . Learning isn’t just a process of an empty bucket being filled— it’s a more complicated process. Kids will forget things and have to relearn them later. Focus on your relationship with your child. Enjoy talking about things they’re curious about.

My 3 year old DS is learning slow (daycare tell me) and not talking much. He is going to get evaluated for speech and get speech services. In the mean time, what can I do to promote learning at home. He loves songs and I believe he learns better through audio and visual. Should I do vtech/leapfrog audio book or flash cards? Which one is better? Or should I buy daycare posters (letter, fruit, animal, shape, colorectal) to decorate his bedroom for him to look at them for more exposures? I hate daycare posters, good for daycare classroom, but not my taste to see them at home. But if it can help him to learn or talk, I will definitely consider it. Or should I get those 100 words books or baby board books for him even though he is 3 now, and he is my last child?
You won’t believe it, but my older DD skipped babbling stage, not talking much for long time (only talked a few words/sounds daily by 3 year old), and went from started talking more to reading simple books in a few months. She has skipped 2 grades in ES. She loves to read books and learns fast and talks really smart. At one time, I was worried to death about her speech but I knew she never had problem with learning. This is my younger child, and he seems not interested in learning knowledge and reading books, and obviously he has problem with talking. I am more concerned about his learning than talking now. He is good at playing toys and daily life activities (put on sock, open door, brush teeth etc) , but he does not seem to recognize any shape, color, letter etc even daycare & I have taught him already. Is 3 year old normal not knowing any of this at all even though he is in daycare environment? I know I cannot compare 2 kids, but I can’t help but getting worried. Any helpful tips will be appreciated.
