+1 for the fails...my straight A student failed the first time (there was a lot of hubris--he figured it would be easy).

There is also an app they can use to take practice tests...not sure what it's called but it was $5 and there are just an endless number of practices.

One more thing—a lot of the knowledge test is NOT intuitive (e.g., what’s a Dutch Reach? What’s a HAWK signal?), so it’s worth printing out the guide available here: https://dmv.dc.gov/node/1115302.

Good point—I initially forgot the documentation of my proof of residence (which is what allows the parent to vouch for the child). A lot of things work here beyond utility bills; we ended up using bank statements, which are generally easy to print off of bank websites.

We brought our child's passport because that was listed as an acceptable form of ID on the DMV website and were turned away-they said that we needed her birth certificate (we are still convinced they are wrong and that they should have accepted the passport but be safe and bring both).

We just got a learner's permit in Georgetown DMV. We went during the day and waited for a while, but eventually we were called and my daughter took the test on a computer. She passed and received a piece of paper. The actual learner's permit came in the mail. There's a practice test on dmv website that she did and she studied while we waited in line. I had gone a week or so before for my own driver's license renewal and arrived at opening, I also waited but not as long as I did when I took her during the day.

Yes, just did it in November. Just take them to Georgetown. No appointment necessary. Very easy.

Are you looking to schedule the knowledge test to get a permit or the road test to get the regular license?

If it's the knowledge test to get the permit, the you can do it at the DC DMV offices via walk-ins...if you want to schedule an appointment, you have to go to these offices out in VA.

My son took the test at the DMV office in Georgetown but I think there is an option of taking the test at an outside provider too. I think you still have to do into the office to get the permit though.

Has anyone with a teen recently gotten a Learner's Permit in DC? I'm completely confused by the DC DMV website. I thought I made it to the point of scheduling a test but then it was setting up an appt in VA.
