AP Physics 1 is similar to Honors Physics. It it fine to take without any prior physics. AP Physic C (there are two AP tests for this Mechanics and Electricity&Magnetism) should not be taken without a prior physics class.

At DC's school, AP Physics 1 has only Algebra II/Trig as a prerequisite. For AP Physics C M/E&M, the minimum is a corequisite of AP Calculus and the teacher's recommendation. Otherwise, AP Calc is a prerequisite.

At my kids' private 'HS, you need honors chem, honors bio, honors physics pre-requisite for the AP versions of those same courses.

Depends on the child, sounds like yours is an organized hard worker, they can probably handle it. Mine went straight to AP Physics but they were also STEM focused with a high degree of math and chem at a Governer's school so was not that big of a deal.

My FCPS Jr is in AP Physics now. Did the same as the above poster's kid - Honors Bio, Honors Chem, now AP Physics. His math was Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II and now Honors Calc.

FCPS DS taking AP Physics C Mrchanics with no physics prerequisite. However AP Calc is required.

My MCPS 9th grader is in AP Physics 1 now. The only pre-req was math (Geometry). DS is also enrolled in Algebra 2. If your child is strong in math she should be okay. If okay/average, I would suggest finishing Algebra 2.

My kid took it last year as a Sophomore and there were no prerequisites other than Alg 2. It’s not a calculus-based class. There are three other AP physics classes…are you sure you’re not looking at one of those by mistake?

In FCPS, there is no physics pre-requisite to take AP Physics. DD took it as a junior with no issues. She took Honors Bio in 9th, Honors Chem in 10th, AP Physics 1 in 11th, and is now in AP Bio in 12th. This seems pretty common at her school, with some kids opting for AP Chem or AP Physics C in 12th instead of Bio.

At my kids’ mcps high school, no pre-requisite is needed for ap physics 1. You do need to take honors physics or ap physics 1 before taking ap physics C.
