But why? If your kid is in a toddler seat, they can sit up in a stroller. If you have an infant, just buy a seat that reclines and has a five point harness.

I'm assuming travel means not having your carseat installed in your private vehicle, which means lugging it around. Wouldn't it be easier to have wheels? Car seat + luggage + kid = too much

PP here - in hindsight I would have skipped the infant bucket seat and just had a convertible with infant insert in each car. For #2, we NEVER hooked the carseat into the stroller, we just carried her until she was 6 months old and could ride in our umbrella stroller. I wish someone had told me to do that with number 1. The infant carseat/stroller system thing is just a ripoff and completely unnecessary. The only time the infant carseat was convenient was for dropping off at daycare.

Mom of 5 and 8 year olds here. SO MANY CARSEATS!!!

We went:

1. Infant seat with 2 bases (used for both kids until they were about 6 or 7 months old)

2. Convertible - Britax Boulevard/Chicco Nextfit (2 cars). We had DD1 in the convertible rear facing until she was 3, then forward faced in that seat until she was about 3.75 and we needed it for the younger one.

3. Combination Harness-to-Booster - Britax Frontier (#1 was harnessed until she was 6.5 b/c they have to be 40lbs to remove the harness and she's tiny, then we used it as a high back booster until it was time to give it to her sibling)

4. Booster w/ Removable Back - Britax Skyline (started using this around 7, and will probably remove the back/buy a backless booster next year - again, she's small, so YMMV with ages).

If we didn't have a sibling that we needed to pass seats onto, we would gone straight from the Combination to a cheap backless booster.

For travel, we had the Cosco Scenara, then Evenflo Maestro, then switched to the Ride Safer Vest, which is SO MUCH MORE CONVENIENT. There are height/weight restrictions to use it, I forget when we started, maybe when my older daughter was 4.

We have always had nice car seats in our cars (nuna rava and the maxi cosi pria) and then a cheap $50 car seat that the airlines can abuse. We also let grandparents use the $50 coscos in their cars too. I have 3 kids- 6 car seats in dh's car and mine, 2 travel car seats, and 1 infant bucket seat that they all used. It's a LOT of $$$ in car seats.

We have 4 kids so have gone through a lot of car seats. For travel, I can’t recommend the wayb pico enough. It’s amazing. I would get that and a very safe car seat with a long lifespan, something like the radian that is narrow but will also convert to a booster.

We have two Evenflo Symphony convertible seats that have been great. They are rather wide, but I think some Gracos and Dionos are more narrow if that’s a consideration. I think a convertible would be your only option now since baby will still be rear facing. They are not that lightweight, unfortunately, but you can buy carts for travel that let you roll the seat through the airport.

OP here: and do others at this point have both a lightweight "travel" car seat like the Cosco and then a permanent one in the car? (crossing our fingers we might try a trip by the summer time)

If 3 across is in your future consider a diono or other skinny seat. We got standard Gracos then needed to replace them

We moved to a Britax boulevard Clicktight for my DD who is also tall but lean.

We've been using a Chicco keyfit for 0 to 12 months, but now our baby is getting close to the 30 inch max mark, so we have to move on to the next size small toddler car seat.

What are your recommendations for (a not tooo expensive), next car seat? She's only about 19 pounds but 30 inches.

We would also love if it was relatively light so we could travel with it.
