If it is any consolation it is still better than when they chose to age in place. The few caregivers mom can stand cancel due to being sick and we pay extra due to risk for people she scares away. With our loved ones in assisted living, at least they have friends in the building and still feel connected. My mother is so isolated and if she gets sick not sure how she will be cared for if nobody can stand to interact with her. Having friends at a facility forces you to practice and retain the social skills longer. Feeling connected is good for immunity and battling illness.

Thank you for this. My mom is like this, too. When she was getting in-home care, even the most patient caregiver lasted only 3 months. My mom is also a PIA at the AL facility, but at least she isn’t isolated. It was a good decision, even with Covid.

So far only cases among staff at my mom's facility. They have restricted visitor access, but thankfully we were able to visit at Christmas.

I am not sure how well the boosters are going to work for people who are very old and have numerous comorbidities, but fingers crossed.

My aunt is in a facility. Vaccines and boosters are required to stay. They brought booster shots to them a I think like a month or maybe 2 ago. It's not nearly like what it was when Covid broke out. There are staff out sick, so they are short staffed. They are back to eating in their room or can reserve outdoor space with friends socially distanced. Any visits are outside for now. She has a bunch of friends there so she is pretty content. They sometimes just chat on the phone even though they are still in the same building. One has a unit next to hers and they meet and chat balcony to balcony. The only friend who passed away from Covid this round was already hospitalized for other health issues and she caught Covid at the hospital. The first round of Covid was far more devastating in terms of loss of life where she is, though i know this isn't over.

I haven't heard about cases in my MIL's facility, but I do know that the residents didn't get their boosters until just a few weeks ago.

Given that the virus is everywhere, there were probably be cases in every facility, which sadly means more in isolation for the residents. This sucks!

Yes. It’s in my mom’s place. They email updates daily. Residents are in isolation or quarantine depending on the sit. Vaccinated and boosters are required there. Omicron is gonna get all of us. It just is what it is. The beginning of endemicity.

bumping this because I'm interested. I have a parent in a local facility and have heard nothing specifically on omicron or about any cases, which I find surprising.

Anyone with family members in assisted living with omicron spread? My MIL is in a local assisted living facility within memory care, and there have been 16 cases just this week, so they are on lockdown for 2 weeks. Just wondering how severe cases have been with this variant and residents who have been boosted?
