HHI is 250k, with a 5 year old Subaru Outback and an 11 year old Honda Odyssey.

HHi is around 425k. We have a Volvo and an Acura.

Low HHI, basic Japanese cars, rather the worse for wear.

We do have significant assets, but they're tied up and we don't want to spend on cars or things that lose value the second we buy them.

I recently moved to the mainline in Philadelphia (after living in DC since college). I have noticed SO MANY Subarus in these suburbs! Its somehow becoming a popular brand among people who have high HHIs, possibly replacing the Volvo or Saab among preppy-type people who are trying to seem low-key. As someone who went to college in Mass I equate Subarus with snowy weather and its funny to see it become popular in the mid-atlantic amid global warming.

When it’s a company car, it’s leased and it’s a business expense so it feels less expensive.

The people you see driving fancy luxury cars generally are not wealthy. They attempting to show off that they are wealthy. My exW makes $100K per year and drives an $85K car. Can you guess why we’re divorced?

I would guess many of the cars you see are leased or financed with little money down for long terms. Most people simply do not make enough to buy $40K-$60K. We make $400K and have one car. It is a 2005 Toyota Camry. It has been paid off since 2008. When it breaks I will buy another with cash.

What is you perception of the HHIs of people by the car they drive? We have a $200k HHI....certainly not stupid DCUM money and drive a Mazda. I can't tell I we are being cheap of if we are perfectly in line with our income. It would make no sense to me to buy a car that costs over $30k with our HHI, yet around the DMV I see tons and tons of people driving Audis, BMWs, Beamers, Tesla, Porsche, Lexus, Acura etc. How much are those people averaging do you think for HHI? I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to buy a BMW unless I made like $500-600k. Yes, I knek that the DMV is wealthy, but are there really THAT many people making $300k+ ? The US census data seems to suggest otherwise. So what's your perception for car brand and HHI? It would also help if you state whether you a consumer or sales pperson.
