I'm from Texas and also miss being able to buy it. Anybody who tells you to make your own from masa harina hasn't had masa prerada made from whole corn kernels.
OP here. I tried calling just now and they are closed this week due to Covid. My tamale dreams are slipping away…

Op here. You’re saying the have the premixed version with lard/oil? Or just Maseca flour in the dry goods area with other flours?

In a pinch, I substitute with corn meal. I've made tomales with them.

Thanks but that’s not what I’m looking for. At a lot of the Mexican supermarkets in California where I’m from you can buy it premixed in the bakery/deli area. That’s the stuff I’m looking for!

You can buy masa harina at most regular grocery stores, but it’s not right for tamales. It’s really easy to make yourself with dried corn, baking soda, and a blender, just takes a couple hours.
