For pure math, it's a toss-up. Of course, if he actually "has math related awards and research," he should know that. He also should have the sense to apply to some of the public powerhouses where admission is more of a sure thing--Illinois, Washington, etc.

A deferral at Harvard is a soft rejection. It is even more challenging to get into Princeton. Good luck but I think you’ve already been told this happening for your child unless uou have major hooks.

I graduated in the 80's and got into both Princeton and MIT. Chose MIT and do not regret!
