Reach. Denied.

Stats-wise it was an easy match but extra curriculars and essays made it seem like more of a reach. Too many unknowns after last year.

Same. DD was at the 75th percentile for stats and really liked UVA so it made sense as that was her best chance at getting in. She wasn’t interested in applying to any T20 schools.

Hooks - in state and (obviously) ED.

Why wouldn't it? I have a kid who could very easily have an almost safety as his top choice. If he knows it's his #1 choice, why not ED and be done?

I suppose but why would DC target a safety?

In his case, because he has very specific academic interests, and the top person in his very narrow field is at a school where he's far above the 75th percentile, and they accept the majority of applicants.

UVA is very prestigious.

DC had stats @/above 75th percentile, but still a reach as acceptance rate under 10%. Went for ED where also a legacy as opposed to the two other schools DC had considered.

Depends if being done by EOY is part of ED goal.

Low reach if that is a category - DC's college counselor used that phrase. Thought DC had a chance, maybe slight, but said DC could end up deferred if there were many, many applicants. Talked through what DC might do for ED2 if deferred. DC decided to stretch for it then go for the ED2 which was more of a target.

DC got in. Worried that there might be buyer's remorse as DC had two preferred reaches. After having 5 classmates, probably better students, rejected at the reaches, DC relieved to be done.

Wouldn’t make sense to ED to a target. You’re just playing the odds. Both DC submitted ED to reaches and were accepted…..but understand that they were still in the 50-75% percentile which is still a reach when acceptance rate is <10%.
