Small spaces can be OK but check local regulations, and expect shade from doctors and lawyers along the way. We have as much house as half a million 2019 bucks will get you in Silver Spring (not much space) and two older kids of our own. Our foster baby’s crib is in our room, which is fine in MoCo up to age 2. Oddly, it’s the crib-in-our-room thing that seems to raise eyebrows with system folks, except for the social workers who are—rightly—focused on how well the baby is doing overall in our home.

For sure! I started the process while living with a sibling in a 2 bedroom home. I’d only be able to foster a child younger than 3, as 3+ requires a separate bedroom, and a foster parent can’t sleep on, say, a couch or in another part of the house that’s not a bonafide bedroom to accommodate this.

Although setup for infant care, I decided to finish grad school and start on a career before going all in, but look forward to starting the process again in a year or two.

You’ll be totally fine with your setup, and can foster 1-2 children of the same gender, which you can request, with what you currently have. Good luck on your decision, and the process towards fostering should you ultimately choose to do so! 🙃

Yes, of course you can and you'd get a stipend and can apply for other benefits like WIC. Kids need a loving home, regardless of the foster parents income.

Can I become a foster parent if I am single living in a 2 bedroom apartment? I am poor by DC MOM standards 45k , but overall I am not poor by the feds, can't get any kind of govt assistance.
