Op I highly highly recommend susan Howard of Arlington lactation. She meets virtually (and is great at it) and I’m telling you she is a bottle EXPERT. She has worked with sooo many babies with bottle refusal. I would go straight to her

My baby never learned how to take a bottle. It was bass. My MIL watched him for a month (3-4 months old) while we waited for our daycare spot. He would have 1/2 oz a day (which I’m sure 100% went down his shirt.). Then he nursed like crazy all night long, and I started to hallucinate from sleep deprivation.

At 4 months old, he went to daycare. Day one was horrid. Day 2, he drank 3 oz during the day via open cup. His record was 10 oz one day, usually via open cup or soppy cup, but normally just drank 5-7 oz. however, by 5 months old, he was also starting to eat solid food which helped.

So, not all babies learn to take bottles. HOWEVER, it all worked out.

Please reach out to the Breastfeeding Center. I have had such wonderful experiences with their LCs. They also have lovely virtual support groups. Good luck, OP.

Nipple shield. Never talked about, but such a game changer and is the perfect bridge to transitioning to a bottle.

The silicone mimics a bottle top, but the bfing/latch stays the same which the baby is looking for.

My first starved herself for 3 days (she nursed morning and night) and then took bottles with ease from then on out. She was the most difficult.

You also might have a lipase issue. Have you tried scalding the milk? My babies also wanted their bottles heated to 98.6 degrees and they liked to be rocked while drinking. None ever took a bottle from me, they only wanted to nurse for me. They all loved Lansinoh momma and hated the others. None liked frozen milk (even after it was scalded) and preferred fresh. So I always pumped and then sent that to daycare the next day.

I wish I knew why I had 3 babies who hated bottles!

Please don’t do this. I work in daycare and I would almost equate this to child neglect or child abuse. There is nothing easy for the infant or anybody else to have a child cry for eight hours straight because they will not take a bottle.

We have had children come in not being able to take a bottle and cry so hard they vomit. Their faces are red with terror. Not only are they not taking a bottle but they are in a room with strangers. This is not the answer and I hate parents who do this. Let daycare “deal” with it. Fu

The place I work with now will not except an infant who will not take a bottle.

Thank you!

This happened to me as well. Tried all the tricks and saw two lactation consultants. In the end what worked was offering a bottle (with just an oz or so) at the start of EVERY daytime feeding. I just used a Haakaa to collect a little each time so it wasn’t too burdensome. It took a week or two of that, but eventually he started reluctantly taking it after all those exposures. Enough so I didn’t panic about him starting daycare. Then was a champ after a couple days of daycare.

I worked with Brittany Hunt and she helped with bottle refusal. Highly recommend her.

Thank you all for the advice! We’ll keep trying and if all fails we’ll rely on the daycare professionals magic touching

Former nanny. I had an experience like this with one family. The baby was 4 months old and would not take a bottle. We had to go hardcore. The dad stayed with him for a couple of days and tried giving him the bottle. The mom nursed in the morning, at night, and during the night. During the day he would only get a bottle. At first he refused and there was lots of crying. Slowly each day he started talking some from the bottle and started earlier and earlier. It took about a week but he was taking bottles during the day without an issue. He fought it but each day he took more and more and would go shorter times between the nursing and when he was willing to take a bottle. He liked the milk very warm. You may not need to do this, but be prepared if you have to. Your baby will eventually take a bottle.

I’m not a LC but I’ve gone through this with my DD. The first few weeks back to work were tough and broke my heart but she eventually started taking it. I had my DH continue to give her a bottle every day even when I didn’t work. I couldn’t be in the house and she had to be hungry.

Hi everyone, does anyone know a good lactation consultants that specializes in overcoming bottle refusal?
Our daughter is 3.5 months, starting daycare in a month,?
but refusing to take a bottle. We’ve tried different positions, different bottles, dad trying mom trying dreamfeeding, everything we can think of but with no success over the past few weeks We live in Takoma DC close to Silver Spring. Any leads are welcome! Thanks so much!
