Another vote for a ride-on. My two-year-old and three-year-old both still plays with theirs.

My nephew is 22 months. He really likes flamingos so I gave him a stuffed flamingo.

Thank you this is a good list. I had been thinking a lock box but it had age 3. Glad we are still in ride-on age.

It's peak age for a ride-on toy, not too late. As for other toys, you have to keep in mind that kids will play with the same toy differently as they age. A toddler toy that seems too advanced may still be appropriate for your child if you adjust your expectations. Just look for ones that veer older because of imaginary play as opposed to fine motor skills. In this regard, the play silks are great, Little People trucks, strollers or grocery carts (these double as push toys), etc.

Good point; my child loves to play with her swaddles and its not as a lovey but something about peak-a-boo and swirling it around.

Honestly - join your local Buy Nothing group on facebook and ask whether anyone is ready to pass on toys or gifts that their child liked at this age but has outgrown. If your group is anything like mine you'll get tons of responses. Aside from being free, it takes the work out of picking out kids gifts, because these are gifts you know other kids this age enjoyed. Then you can regift them when your kid outgrows them and everyone saves a little money and helps lower their environmental impact just a little.

I got all 8 nights of Hanukkah covered for my 18 month old and 3 year old this way, and so far every gift has been a hit.

Various type of blocks
Start the magnetic tile collection (magformers etc)
Musical instruments ( shakers, tamborine etc)
Stacking/nesting cups
Board books
Little People Sets
Large knob wooden puzzles

My 18 month old loves the little kid rocking chair.

A train table is great for this age and will keep their interest for a couple years.

Boxes are still a favorite at this age, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money. One year I painted a couple of cardboard moving boxes and put them inside each other with ribbons and tissue paper. In the smallest one was a little stuffed animal. My kid LOVED those boxes.

I am hoping for toy ideas for 18 months olds? I find that most toys are sorted babies: 0-24 months and toddlers 2-4 years. The baby toys seem too young and the toddler toys too advanced.

We dont have a ride-on, have we missed the window? We would like something active for indoors this winter. We have 1 set of Duplo and plan to add. Maybe a simple game/cards to encourage new words but is there something age appropriate?
