It doesn’t help Asian applicants but quite helpful if you are Black or Hispanic. For Caucasians, it’s a wash unless you are coming from a underprivileged rural or inner city school or were home schooled.

You should shoot an email to his school counselor so he/she can keep you updated. You can email NMF as well.

Parent with first child in high school here. DS took the PSAT in October, his junior year at FCPS. His score looks good but I understand the cutoff is high in VA.
What's next?
Will there be a notification/instructions/guidance from the school?

It helps but not a huge factor for top colleges as they attract plenty of top scorers, it’s important everywhere else, specially schools offering scholarships as such schools won’t get attention of these top scorers without incentives so they literally try to buy them with bribe scholarships.

Not sure about that, he is targeting top 60 or so (ie UMDCP) no FA but can’t afford 70k colleges

DP.. honestly, I wouldn't have my kids go to any of those schools, even with a full ride. I'm not hankering for ivies, either.
