OP here- I kid you not- here is what they sent out - shootings and car jackings are happening around schools and they send out a "pat on the back" to themselves for crossing guards...

"Mayor Bowser Launches Two New Safety Initiatives Near Schools
School Traffic Safety
This week, Mayor Bowser announced two new safety initiatives near schools:

On Monday, the Mayor announced that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is now conducting a traffic safety campaign targeting safety in school zones. MPD’s Traffic Safety and Specialized Enforcement Section has developed a plan to target traffic enforcement and education in the areas around schools in each police district.

Then, on Friday, the Mayor announced that six community-based organizations will receive $4.3 million from the Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes to support the District’s new Safe Passage Safe Blocks initiative. The investment will provide an additional 215 safe passage personnel in 7 priority areas across 6 wards and 47 schools. Safe Passage Safe Blocks providers will hire and manage trusted, caring adults to be placed on mapped routes to support student safety as students travel to and from school, while building strong relationships with surrounding communities. The initiative also involves an in-school component, including conflict resolution, mediation services, and community relationship-building to keep students safe and improve student attendance. "

Truly, that idiot's office is the last place I'd go for help. Either sell your home or arm yourself, and good luck with that in the District. I'm so happy I left the city last year, thanks COVID!

Police don’t deter crime.

At least Google what it actually means before you try to sound clever. I swear it’s like you people are proud to embrace and admit ignorance.

Yep, and the crossing guard by our Brookland school is rightfully not willing to risk her life stepping into the street when the light changes but instead yells at the multiple cars running red lights at every light cycle.

Call the non-emergency line and ask for more patrols in your neighborhood. And email MCDuffie/get on twitter and make some noise.

You chose to live in a bad part of the city. There are many bad parts and police shortages, so it's not going to happen...move.

He wants to be AG so he can take his philosophy city-wide. Truly, a worthy successor to Racine.

I think you're supposed to wait 20 years to see if the early intervention work they're doing pans out. Or something. But not enforcement in the mean time.

We need to vote them all out. The violence is all over the city. We’re in Shaw so it feels pretty constant. Police hands have been tied. Defund police what a sick joke.

OP, you have to get your city council person involved and riled up about this. The ANC is not the answer; they have zero power and influence at MPD. Not sure who your CC member is...?

Call their office tomorrow. Start an email campaign with your neighbors. Don't stop until you have the response you want.

What is the best way to request increased police presence/neighborhood patrols in DC? There was an 11:15 am shooting and then a 5:15 pm car jacking (two separate incidents) by our daughter's school, December 1 and December 2. The MPD used to have patrol cars parked by the recreational fields to try to curtail the drug sales that were happening daily. Since the kids have returned in person to school, we have not seen the squad cars.

The school is talking to the ANC, however would it not be better to talk to the Council member's office and also the Mayor's office? Do we reach out to the MPD that covers that area of Brookland? Ironically, the Mayor's office was touting its school safety initiatives in a newsletter on Dec 3.

Thanks all and stay safe and well-
