I pay $115 with 20% tip.

That sounds expensive, but not too far out of line if your dog is matted. In the warmer months, I just have the groomer clip my doodle’s coat very short. We can go 2-3 months between grooming, but I comb my pup’s coat almost every day after his hair gets more than about 3/4” long. If stay on it, it is so much easier, and it just takes a few minutes, if you do it daily. My pup loves it, and knows the drill - at night he will get up on the coach and whine until I comb him.

I use a regular dog comb or a detangling comb, if needed. You’ve got to get all the way down to the skin. A slicker brush just slides over the top of my dog’s hair.

I have this and don’t know how to use if. Does it just glide through or do you pick up the coat with it too fluff? I got it after his last grin and even freshly groomed it does not seem to go through the coat easily.

I’m accustomed to Golden retriever and undercoat rakes.

Are you tipping$25 on $175? No, that’s not enough. I have a 20 Lv non shedding dog, and I tip $20 on $90.

Standard poodle owner here as well. We shave him every 2 weeks, brush 3 times a week. We never squeeze his glads, or pluck his ear hairs. We get him professionally groomed maybe once every three months for around $200+

Buy your own trimmers, shave and brush the dog between professional grooming. It won't be perfect but it'll suffice

Squeeze the anal gland. Do a sanitary cut. Pull out the hair from their ear canals.

It's not unrealistic to do it yourself. We we forced to do our own grooming during the pandemic simply because no one would come and get our dog to groom him.

An electric (with chord) trimmer can cost about $100-$150 (Amazon). You brush and shampoo your dog, when they are dry and clean you trim with the variable length trimming tool.

You can put drops in his ears, file his nails, fluff up his tail. It is easy.

I have a standard poodle, and the place we go to ends up costing me about $200 after tip (I usually do $25...my dog is still under a year old and a giant PITA). I knew it would be expensive, but they are saying we need to come every 6 weeks instead of every 8 weeks, and it's ending up costing me quite a bit more than I originally thought. Not to mention I find them to be pretty rude and condescending, so I am really looking for a reason to try somewhere else! I would like to do it myself, but it's unrealistic. I do know I need to brush differently and more often (DH promised to help with grooming as he's the reason we had to get a non-shedding pup...I'm still waiting). He's the first non-shedding breed I've had, and I'm still learning how to take care of the kind of coat, and instead of giving me helpful tips the groomer just basically makes excuses for why they couldn't do something we asked them to do.

I keep clipping the pup shorter and shorter each time in the hope that it will make the coat easier to maintain. We're eventually going to be shaving the dog down to nothing (and then why am I paying so much?!?).

What do you pay for a dog of similar grooming requirements (~45+ lbs, non-shedding coat)?
