I’m confused what you mean by this. No need for SAT tutoring but then go for tutoring? I guess I’m not sure what the difference is. My kids received tutoring in English (specifically grammar as MCPS doesn’t cover it) from the SAT tutor.


I think she means paid tutoring.

Your advice is probably good for a very intelligent, good test taker who is intrinsically motivated.


I'm guessing your child also had a very high PSAT score and is clearly self motivated.

Take class summer after sophomore yr - only need algebra 2 for SAT so you’re in good shape there - take SAT end of August, PSAT October, and if necessary SAT in Dec. then you’ve studied for SAT and PSAT, and are done with all of that before junior yr second semester pressure rears its very ugly head.

^ This is what my kids did as well - started tutoring end of July/beginning August and tested in October/December. One key thing is they took a practice ACT and practice SAT on consecutive weekends shortly after school got out, so they knew which test was best for them.

I sent both of my sons to an SAT class the summer after Sophomore year. Then, in the fall of Junior year, they took the PSAT and SAT. This left the spring for another SAT if needed. I liked the idea of being done with testing Junior year. This left Junior summer for looking at colleges.

Hang in there. My TERRIBLE, and I mean truly terrible, test taker is at college (state flagship) and doing really well. And this was before test optional! It will all work out!

I have the same question.

My current Sophomore can start taking the SAT next fall, and then again in Spring, and then fall of Senior year?

As OP asked, what is the best 1 on 1 tutoring schedule for this?

Unlike when I was a teen, the tests seems to be offered very frequently now, so as pp said, work it with your child’s schedule. My kids prepped for about 8 weeks leading up to the test (both took winter tests because winter was a lighter schedule for them with respect to sports). Also, your child may do much better on the ACT vs SAT, and regardless there is so much room for improvement between 10th and 11th grades.

It really depends on your schedule and your kid. Mine set aside July and august to prep and took it at the end of august and then again in October. If you think your kid would do better they could study over a longer period. Mine would not have been motivated to do that. We didn’t do a group class but mine are already really good test takers. We did prep1to1 and had weekly tutoring sessions. That worked well and gave them accountability.

We got results for my sophomore DS from the October PSAT. They were not great. They're a decentt student and I think will benefit greatly from SAT tutoring. My question is ... should we do one round this coming summer (going into junior year) and then maybe another one in the winter of junior year? Or just round? When is the best time to prep?

If it helps, child is in Algebra II.
