From what I understand, the roux for gumbo is not your everyday roux. It needs to be cooked until it's very dark brown (some will say almost black). It sounds tricky. I have never heard of buying roux, though.

Are you wanting to buy file powder? Should be in most grocery stores with a well stocked spice area.

If you don't think you are a skilled enough cook to make roux, what exactly were you planning on doing for the rest of the gumbo?

Look up Slton Brown’s oven roux. No stirring.

I’m not a good cook but roux is something that even I can make easily!

All it is: half cup flour with half cup butter in a medium pot over medium heat. Stir constantly till you get a golden to brown color. Then add whatever you need to add to make your recipe. That’s it!

You can buy Savoie’s on Amazon. We prefer making our own, but it takes a while to get it that dark, so the jarred one will save time.

I made a beer cheese sauce last night to dip our soft pretzels and apples in. Every recipe starts with melting butter, adding flour, and cooking it a little bit.

That's roux. You got this.

I found this helpful:

Looks like you want a brown roux, so just stir and cook the butter/flour a little longer. It just takes minutes!

I don't think you can buy roux, you just make it. A roux is nothing more than a fat and flour cooked together. I would think that most recipes for gumbo tell you how to start it with a roux. I may be missing something but I've never seen premade roux for sale in the grocery stores.

It's just flour and fat in equal measures. Heat and stir, heat and stir, don't stop yet, you want it a little darker, a little darker: congrats. You made roux.

All you need is flour and fat. Literally, that's it. Find a recipe online and follow it. Voila!

I would like to make gumbo and I do not know how to make roux from scratch. I've looked at Giant, Safeway, and Walmart but I
can not find it. I just moved to Bethesda from Texas so I am not familiar with this area. If there is a grocery store/market that you know of that I can
purchase roux, please post at your convenience. Thank you so much!
