They/them pronouns do not necessarily signify transgender. They can signify nonbinary also. A large number of my DD's college friends use they/them, she/they or he/they pronouns as a way of circumventing assumptions about gender. It is as much a political statement as a statement of identity.

My College age niece refers to someone with a typical male name as her partner and also they /them pronouns? Is this person likely a transgender male? I am supportive of whatever makes her happy and will not ask her directly since she did not volunteer more.
