Did you make comments about cutting back on carbs or sweets during the meal. Perhaps she thought you wanted her to take it. Or she often attends potlucks where the rule is you take home your own stuff to avoid anyone having to deal with it (like a potluck at a park).

It's odd, but maybe she thought she was doing you a favor because usually the host has too many leftovers to consume let alone store. Who wants a fridge stuffed full of leftovers they have to try and eat before they go bad? One plate's worth is fine, but days worth? No thanks.

Be honest with yourself, would you have truly eaten it or tossed it because you're overstuffed from the holiday? Yes it's weird, but in the grand scheme of things, she probably did you a favor.

Really tacky but I've seen this happen in recent years.

I would offer or ask the hostess if she would like the rest.

It is only common sense (isn’t it??)
It would be rude/tacky to just assume it was okay to take the leftovers home.

And the ice cream too??! 😳

Even in this instance, I think you offer to leave ALL, if not just slices for the host to enjoy later. Very tacky to take it all, even the ice cream! So weird!

Host keeps the leftovers, unless they insist you take some.

Agree. I will ask if I can move the leftovers to their dish so I can take my actual dish home, but leave the food with them.

We hosted some friends for dinner last night. We provided the meal, one friend offered to bring a dessert. At the end of the night, she gathered up the rest of the apple pie plus the ice cream from our freezer and took it home with her. I found it so strange and it’s definitely something I would never do myself—I always leave the host with the leftovers of whatever I brought, unless they offer I take it home.
