I talked a bunch of my U13/U14 boys into getting certified and reffing a few years back and yes, it definitely helped them see the whole game better. We would talk about it, and they would watch how you can see the play developing and what's going to happen. The ones that reffed definitely got better at predicting the way the play is developing faster than the ones who didn't. They got better at making better runs, smarter decisions on the ball, and anticipating the other team's play.

It depends on league, club and assignor. Listed above is an example of ONE assignor

As a current player, the number of games he could work each Sat/Sun will be limited primarily by his own schedule. A reasonable expectation would be to work 2 games after his own game. If he doesn’t have games, maybe 3-4 a day. For a tournament weekend, you could definitely work more, just make sure they have good, comfortable black running shoes.

Pay probably works out to about $15-25 an hour when you factor in spacing between games. For example, your son is u14, ARs pay probably $35 for a u14 travel game. Those tend to be scheduled in a 1:45 or 2 hour block. So if you run 2 lines on u14 games that’s $70 for about 3.5 hours or $20 an hour.

Take a u10 center say $27 a game. These are probably scheduled in 90 min blocks so you work 2 games in 3 hours for $54.

Just about every league has a different pay scale. Also, different ages have different pay scales. Also, center referee is different than sideline referee. So you'll have to ask a more specific question. Sideline refs (or AR) gets paid $30 for U13 and U14 NCSL. U15 and U16 get $35. But SFL, EDP, ECNL-R, ECNL...etc pays differently.

My son makes $30 for rec, $35 for ADP, and then it’s $35-45 for sideline AR travel and tournament games. He prefers rec games because they are close by, easy jobs, and he will do 2-4 games in a row some weekends if he’s free. He has USFF8.
