Pro-Tip, always select ‘Item arrived too late’.

Kohl's has free Amazon returns, too. I feel like that's the only thing keeping that store in business.

If you choose some sort of damage as return reason, ups will pick up for free.

Amazon refunded my money without me asking when my items showed up late. I couldn’t believe it.

This right here.

If you select a reason that's a 'you' reason vs. a seller reason, it's not always free.

I found if you select bought by mistake or changed mind, they charge you. If you always select inaccurate website description or item defective or doesn't work, you get to return it for free.

Speaking of Amazon, I don't like how they sneakily give store credits in some instances instead of crediting your card back. Yes, I know I will likely use the credit, but don't make that decision for me.

You have to choose the right category and they will UPS pick up.

I did a return yesterday at UPS, and the only thing I had to pay for was the packet to mail it in, which was $2.

I will say that the Amazon return process inconsistencies are annoying, though. Sometimes, you have multiple ways to return items, and other times you don't. With yesterday's return, I was only given the option to return it via UPS, which required that I print the label and package it. I much prefer making returns at Whole Foods, because its a very in and out process.

OP here. This was it! I initially chose “item not needed” because I realized the pillows were too soft (despite being described as firm) and I don’t want soft pillows. I hit the back button and chose “item not as described”, and it’s now free to drop it off at the UPS store.

Go back and check if your return really was free. Some are not and you probably missed it.

It might have to do with if the seller is a 3rd party on the Amazon platform or Amazon. Third party sellers require you pay for the shipping, direct from Amazon usually doesn't.

There’s always a free option, but it’s usually a locker, a Whole Foods or an Amazon storefront. I think largely because they gather the items there without packaging, vs ups which is shipping individual boxes.

I just did an Amazon return today. I could drop off at Whole Foods, Amazon or UPS, all for free.
