We decided to have holidays in our own home when we got married, long before we had children. We made our own traditions. I expect my own children to do the same.

We host Thanksgiving, all are welcome. My parents and ILs usually come here (MIL, FIL, BIL and his family). My sister and her family go to her ILs.

We are always home for Christmas day, and again, anyone is welcome. And, everyone usually does their own family thing. We usually go to BILs for Christmas Eve dinner, my ILs usually stay there (because they were with us for Thanksgiving), and my parents usually join us Christmas morning.

We have always alternated. My family for one holiday, then his family for the next. The following year, it's the reverse. It's a PIA. Now that his parents are deceased, we get on or the other off to be just us.

Yes...set the schedule the year we were married (ages ago) and stuck to it. We have stayed home for xmas with just three of us but its boring honestly. I like to be home (and parents are deceased) but it would be more fun to have more people around.

But starting off with a schedule or set understanding means we never have to answer questions each year.

No. Christmas is always at home, just us, and Thanksgiving is at my parents’ because they’re within driving distance. His parents require a flight and have never asked us for the holidays.

We usually have Thanksgiving here with my parents (I'm an only). Then they come up for the week before christmas and stay at our place with our animals while we go out of town for the week to visit my husband's family.

For the first time in the 20+ years I have been with my husband, my MIL is coming HERE for Christmas. I'm so happy we don't have to travel - I really, really dislike it.

Yes my mom threw a fit early on that we weren't alternating, but DH's family is overseas and we cant visit for THanksgiving so I may be finally old enough to not care what she thinks.

if they were overseas, that would be even less reasonable. Ours is domestic travel, but a couple thousand in airfare just to get there is annoying, especially since we then are packed into a house for a week without a car of our own.

This year worked out for us because my husband took our girls there over the summer. The first time they had seen that side of the family since the end of 2019.

Not at all sad about not having to go there. I love my MIL, but I dread that trip every year.

Does anyone else do this? Honestly, it’s a PIA and we prefer one house over the other, but don’t want to hurt feelings.
yes, we alternated each year, but we were a little flexible in case things needed to be switched in a particular year.
and we alternated a bi5 between our house and the other houses. We generally hosted one or the other.

No. We travel for both holidays as a family. Some years we host a Friendsgiving.

My DH almost always works TG so he can have Xmas off. We always go to my parents for TG, and then have a big dinner with ILs on the weekend. We rotate Christmas.

OP yes this is very common. And unless there is a really issue with one side it’s hard to just stop. Thankfully the ILs started traveling at Thanksgiving so we only have to deal with Christmas now.
