My U14 DD (NCSL D1 -- All VA for now) has shown some interest in trying out for her high school team{s?} next year. (I know, I know. At least I've got several months to guide her "decision." She intends to remain with her club team.)

Assuming enough players tryout for the various freshman, JV, and varsity school teams, what's a common number for roster sizes? 15? 18? 25? Do HS teams typically try to two or three players with "some" amount of goalkeeper training?

Thanks in advance.

Like others have said it depends on the school and how many kids try out and the makeup of how many are seniors. Most schools have a hard limit on roster size across all teams, Varsity/JV based on how many uniforms they have.

Probably would be helpful for us to know what schools - or at least the leagues - your DD is considering. For example, are you looking at a 6A school in Western Fairfax, independent private school in DC, etc.

My son is a GK and as a freshman he made the varsity team because he was the only kid to tryout with any previous GK training and experience. Now that he is a junior, there are some more GK's to choose from but the last 2 years he was the only one. Our HS has only 2 teams JV and Varsity. No freshman only teams in soccer. Rosters are around 18-20 at our school.

Yes, really depends on the year as to a new player making the squad. Senior heavy teams will have less new players, but the following year you might have a greater chance of making it.

My daughter's varsity team has 20. The team has two GKs, both club players. (private school, so they play in the fall). A couple of kids were injured most of the season so it's really more like a roster of 18. There's at least one more goalkeeper who plays on the JV team. No freshman team at our school.
