I don't think Dexter's moral code is vastly different from most people's, which is why he is a relatable figure that audiences tend to like. I think the difference is that he's more willing to take out the trash than most of us.

I think the idea is that he was deeply traumatized by witnessing his mother's brutal murder and being locked in with her dismembered body for hours (days?), and so he's emotionally damaged. No suggestion that he was autistic prior to that.

We just started S5. The way he delt with R's death. He didn't know how to react.
The way he is aloof at work. Doesn't pick up on cues.
And the way coworkers make fun of him, that wouldn't happen now, because of Autism awareness.
