How is it being realistic? All White and Asian kids are not high performing academically; all Black kids are not economically deprived. Actually DC's open secret is the large number of MC and UNC Black kids in the parochial privates. Those families don't even look at DCPS.

There are many ways to achieve a desired result, i.e. tutoring. If your kid is a star, they will shine and you get it done. Even private school parents find they have to supplement. If McKinley doesn't meet your needs, just move on.

This is blatantly racist. The idea that a school would be good enough for black and brown kids, but not good enough for white and asian kids is racist.
As to the stories about a school cheering on kids who score 3s on an AP exam, I think it's a good thing that they are supporting their students. Would you rather they shame kids who didn't get 5s? Not every kid is going to get a 5, and maybe that was a good score for that student. Do you think just because some students got a 3s, your child will also get a 3, as if it were catching? Look, if you don't want your kid to be at a school unless a certain threshold of the students is white or asian, then maybe this isn't the right school for you (at least not this year). But be honest about your reasons. Because the program itself is very impressive.

How about dropping the idea that 3s on AP exams are going to help your STEM-minded UMC white kid get into a good college?

I don't doubt that the grown-ups in charge at McKinley Tech haven't got their heads around the above, not yet anyway.

If your kid is white or Asian kid and interested in McKinley Tech, they need to be OK with being part of a tiny minority (in the single digits). Parents need to be prepared for teachers and guidance counselors who cheer for UMC kids who score 3s on AP exams, without seeming to register that 3s are pretty much useless to UMC applicants applying to competitive colleges. There's no push for students to score 4s and 5s. To my mind, it's all a bit of a joke if your family isn't low SES and minority.
