Items I'd recomment, but ask the parents about first:
Play kitchen (a bit on the early side, but if her parents are going to buy her one, totally a fine time to get it)
Big ticket summer items: Water table, sand table (look into Jurassic sand), Micro mini scooter
A play faucet

My 15 month plays with duplo. Even if they aren't old enough for pretend play they will be entertained opening and closing doors on the kitchen. Agree with asking parents first. They may be hoping for something (or hoping *not* for something).

Agree with this as an apartment dweller. Small things are best; trips out are great!

A name puzzle is always good.

I'd also just ask the kid's parents. People kept giving my kid stuffed animals and it got kind of ridiculous how many we had.

I only get babies and toddlers books.

Ask the parents! My brother-in-law and his partner bring presents every time they see our daughters and while well-intentioned, end up cluttering our house. When they give "big" presents like a dinosaur chair, it drives me crazy because we already have several kid-size pieces of furniture, including a soft chair.

In my opinion, donating to 529 or "experience" gifts would be the best present, like a museum membership or tickets to puppet shows/kids' music concerts. Heck, it wasn't a present per se, but when they volunteered to babysit the kids while my husband and I went to dinner, I felt like that was the best present ever. Plus they actually spent time with the kids, who had a ball, instead of giving them useless junk.

I’m out of the loop on what’s cool for little toddlers. Can anyone give me some ideas on a gift that might be appreciated? They live in a smallish house, so nothing too big. We like to spoil her a bit, so budget is anything under $200.
