OP -- did you grow up with mince pies or are you looking to try them as a novice?

I grew up with them and use "mince" and "mincemeat" pie interchangeably to mean a fruit filling. It doesn't have meat in it, but it's not necessarily vegetarian -- it might have animal fat in the preparation.

I would not call a savory meat pie a "mince" pie (although I might call ground beef "mince").

I'd recommend the Walker's in the box (same folks that make shortbread).


OP here. I am hosting for the holidays and an elderly relative made a request for mince pie. This type of dessert is definitely not my jam. I looked at recipes, but some of the ingredients were difficult to obtain, so I’ve decided to try to buy the best mince pie I can find.

Small point - mincemeat, the fruit filling, sometimes has suet in it. I think in general suet, lard, etc aren't thought of as fats that can be called vegetarian. Butter, though an animal product, would be fine.

OP, World Market has some during the holidays.

I am from England. A mince pie is a dessert you eat at Christmas. It definitely does not have meat in it……..

I just buy the boxed ones from Rodmans. Not a paragon of the oeuvre, necessarily, but they are a bona fide mince pie.
