A. You need to give your nanny her annual raise especially this year. We pay $27 for a one and three year old (in part time preschool) and still feel it’s a bargain for all she does (kids laundry, kids food shopping, kids ordering) it’s and how she loves our kids. And we are far from rich! We cut corners and definitely budget carefully for our nanny.

You need to give her her usual rate and increase her pay. $25 is definitely average for two kids. Nanny’s rent, gas and food all increased the same as yours. And one infant and toddler is no easier than two toddlers.

I know it’s a big expense. I know it’s hard to afford. We sacrifice for our nanny too.

I just went through this exact same thing and did A. Increased her pay by $1/hr. $25/hr is a very reasonable rate for two kids. (If you had been paying $30/hr in the share I might have said it’s time to get a new nanny)

If after one year of a nanny share, the nanny is now just working for your family and watching your two kids, would you change her rate?

a) Yes - it's been a year, she should get a raise
b) Yes - moving from a share to a single family is less hassle for her, her rate should go down
c) No - a and b cancel each other out, just keep the same rate

If you chose a or b, what should the new rate be? Current rate is $24 per hour ($12 per family). This is in DC.

12$ per family is extremely low. I make 25$ for 1 infant single family.

OP here.

Is there any world in which "should I give you a raise?" results in any answer other than yes?

No, I mean talk to your nanny about your options!!! She may prefer to move on or get another share with your baby and a new baby while your older child is at daycare.

How many kids did she watch before? If she goes from 4 kids from 2 families to 2 kids from 1 family that is a huge reduction in work (though it is the same number of hours). Or do you mean you share was $500 a week and you will now pay both shares?

OP here. She doesn't use all her leave now! She has 10 days and took three of them. But we're giving her a week and a half off at Christmas, paid, since both families will be out of town.

She will definitely get more PTO because she'll be off whenever we're away, plus whatever time off she chooses to take. Right now, when one family is out of town, she's still stuck watching the other baby.

That's an interesting angle though. We would essentially go from 2 weeks paid leave to something like 2 weeks of your choosing, 2 weeks of our choosing. That's a pretty big perk.

I think keeping the rate the same is reasonable. It is a lot less work dealing with one family instead of 2

OP here. Yes, B isn't really on the table, but when offering multiple choice, I wanted to cover all my bases.

Really I'm trying to figure out if we need to give her a raise or not.

agree with PP. B is a NEVER DO unless you want to find a new nanny

B is never an option. She is working the same amount of hours. After one year she gets a raise, A.
