This doesn’t sound like a back handed compliment to me. This is just a compliment.

NP- while context is key here 9 times out of 10 this isn't a compliment. It is one of those statements psychos use in the work place and say "but it was a compliment!"

This is a pretty standard cliché but I really loathe when someone says to me “that’s not a bad idea“. It’s so condescending. You mean, “that’s a good idea, you ass?” Is what I feel like responding.

“you’re actually really smart.”

"You are really good at your job. But have you ever thought about staying home with your kids?"

Um...... I was pregnant with my 4th and running two departments with a total budget of $20mil+. This was from another dept head who has 4 kids and a SAHW.

Good news he is gone, asked to explore his options elsewhere and I have been promoted to #2!

I look like DC. Sad face.

lol, we once stopped for lunch on our way to the beach in a fairly good-sized city and got the same reaction. We're an average looking, normal acting family, what gives it away that we're from DC?!?

During a media training session that I was leading my boss told me “You’re lucky - it doesn’t matter what you say!” Implying no one was interested in what I had to say, just how I looked. I was like 25 at the time and it seemed like a compliment then, not so much now when I think about it.

My daughter joined a soccer carpool when she was a teen. One of the carpool moms was an acquaintance of mine—we had mutual close friends and had seen her family a lot through the years. At our first tournament she made a point of telling me how much she loved driving DD. She added “I always thought she was quiet and reserved, like you, but she’s not boring at all! She’s so bubbly and hysterically funny!” Thanks?

I had a dean for diversity and inclusion call me “Mama” while I was pregnant and who made fun of my pregnant “waddle.” Good times!
