Given that nearly half of Virginia voters cast a ballot for McAuliffe, I’d say a lot of people preferred McAuliffe to Youngkin. You’re acting like the election was a blow-out when in reality Youngkin won by less than 2 points.

I argued at the time that Jennifer McClellan was the only Democratic candidate who stood to defeat Youngkin. McAuliffe was clearly a washed-up hack and the other Democratic candidates were preposterous: Carroll Foy’s campaign was entirely about her race and gender and Carter was an immature, nutty socialist. Unfortunately for the Democrats, they let McAuliffe buy the nomination, only to confront someone with more money and infinitely better political instincts.
