Jeeps are for people who want to show the world that they have more money than sense and don't give a shite about the next generation, given they pollute a ton, don't have reliable parts, and are expensive to buy and maintain.

I really like the rubicon but I have no confidence in Jeep so I’d go with the less fun, far more reliable 4Runner.

I am not wrangler hater, but make sure your sit in one and feel the size (more importantly, the narrowness). the Wrangler is easily a foot or more narrow than a 4runner because the doors are inside the wheel wells. The Rubicon is better off road, but I am not sure that you can find terrain within a 4 hour drive that too extreme for a 4runner (model with locking differential and off road tires) but can be handled by a Rubicon.

This is a good alternative. FWIW, I owned a 2019 4Runner for 2 weeks. Toyota seriously lacks on the tech department and my 2007 Suburban was more advanced. I traded it for a Jeep and am much happier.

For the price difference get a rubicon as then less to worry about later.

Worry about what? It’s practically the same vehicle. Aside from tires, axle ratios, lockers and sway bars, it’s the same vehicle.

The upgrades help, especially all the safety features. Big difference from a sport to rubicon.

The 4Runner is more at home on pavement than any of the Jeep versions. The model distinctions among the various Jeeps (Rubicon, High Altitude, Overland, others) are all relatively small (tires, electronic gadgets and interior trim mostly) or are things that are only useful in off road situations (super low range, locking differentials, sway bar disconnects). Other than that, the Jeep models are all virtually identical, as far as on-pavement manners.

I’ve owned five Jeeps and loved every one of them, and drove them countless miles in the deserts of CA and AZ. But if I’m only driving a vehicle on the street, I’d want the 4Runner.

I have a 2 year old Rubicon and love it. I worried about regretting it because of the price, but zero regrets and we are considering a second one at some point as my spouse keep steeling mine. Do get an extended warranty. Go on the Jeep Wrangler forums and there are lists on where to get the Jeep warranty cheaper than the dealer. And, try to negotiate 8% off invoice. Go to MD as there are less dealer fees than in VA.

It depends.

City driving and commuting? 4Runner. The Rubicon isn’t as comfortable and doesn’t have the storage and other creature comforts of the 4Runner.

Dirt, mud and rocky trails in the woods where a tow truck will never be able to rescue you? Rubicon, no question. The 4Runner will never be able to handle the sort of conditions the Rubicon was designed for.

Where you might (even occasionally) drive it should dictate the choice.

Are you ever going to do any *real* off-road driving? I don’t mean gravel roads, the beach, or regular roads covered with snow - I mean REAL off-road trails. Stuff that most people wouldn’t think would be possible to drive a vehicle on?

If you aren’t planning on ever doing stuff like that, get the 4Runner.

If you ever plan on doing actual off-road driving, get the Rubicon.

The 4Runner is much better and more comfortable on pavement, and the Rubicon will go places that would literally destroy the 4Runner.

4Runner, unless you love the fun and excitement of never knowing how much the mechanic is going to charge for yet another problem with your jeep.

Also if you buy the jerp it automatically comes with the doichiest vanity plate your state offers.

For 40 yr old with no kids. First time buying new. Worth it for DC? Will be using for commute to work and back and weekend trips.
