The Dems in CA and NYC only survived because they were literally running against nutcases. Parents were angry but they weren't infuriated enough to vote for a guy who brings his cats to the poll.

I mean each party did take a different approach. Dems took it seriously. This helped Biden in 2020 when Covid was new. It hurt Ds in 2021 in areas that were super cautious about Covid and ppl started questioning if that was the right approach (ie, closed schools)

Also, I agree with your last point. In fall 2020 we just didn't know. Most DMV UMC preferred schools either virtual or hybrid, not opening packed schools. It seemed like the right call to many. But as time went on and most other parts of the country opened schools and it was overall fine (not perfect and yes there were Covid cases), ppl here felt we missed the boat. This could have been a more nuanced talking point -- Ds were trying to keep everyone safe but it was really hard for many and maybe it didn't have to be that way, we couldn't have known then what we know now, etc.

It was school closures and learning loss. They said McAuliffe had no plans to address the school failures and their kids academic challenges.

His whole “parents shouldn’t have a say in schools” after a year and a half of having to literally manage their kids education at home was incredibly dismissive and tone-deaf. And when called on it, he just doubled down. He needed open ears and a closed mouth, not the other way around.
