I studied industrial/organizational psych and human factors. It’s a great track if you like psych but don’t want to be a clinician. With such a degree to could develop corporate selection/retention programs or design workplaces/technologies to be more user/worker friendly.

I got a BA in psychology then a Master's degree in teaching and spent my career as a teacher. I loved studying psychology and think the background was helpful. My husband got a PsyD and worked as a psychologist at a hospital and in private practice, then at a school for learning disabled children, then had a midlife career change, got an MFA in creative writing and taught writing at a college. A family friend with a BA in psychology has worked at a school and in a psychology lab focusing on adolescents and is now in a clinical psych grad program.

One of my closest friends has a BS in Psychology and has worked her whole career in marketing research (no masters degree).

None of these tales sound tragic.

I hope you are not a parent trying to talk your child out of their professional goal. That would be wrong because it is her life not yours.

4 psych majors in my circle

1 got a M.Ed. after the psych degree and is a special education teacher

1 got a masters and worked as a therapist in residential settings before leaving that for an administrative position in the same general field

1 worked in direct service in a TBI program and now has a director position in an association in that general field

1 got a Masters in School Psychology and is working as a school psychologist in a local high school

It’s no more worthless than a bachelor’s degree in many things (literature, sociology, history, etc.).

I have a Ph.D in clinical psychology and am a licensed psychologist. Most of what I do is scientific program administration for the government, but I also do some clinical work on the side. I love it.

I minored in Business (PR & Personnel) to make myself more marketable before attending grad school. I wound up recruiting lawyers for a prestigious law firm on Wall Street. I was actually quite a cushy job.

My sister was a psych major and spent her entire career with the IRS.

My niece is a therapist. She also got her masters in psych.

If you were a psych major, what kind of work are you doing now? No hidden agenda here -- I was an English major, so I'm not one of those posters who thinks everyone should be studying supply chain management (not that there's anything wrong with that either). I'm just thinking about possible career paths DD, a college sophomore who just declared a psych major, might pursue after college. So far, she's really interested in cognitive development, psychology of language, and adolescent development, which all sound fascinating to me.
