Baby proof your house! Make sure they can't get into any medications or food. Secure your trash.. Make sure your plants aren't toxic. I like to confine them to at least one floor for a while.

Patience. A puppy can break you. They are annoying AF, they get into everything and often they don't sleep. No one would get a puppy if they weren't so cute.

Start with where you want them to sleep from day 1 -- a crate with a towel over it is a good start. Nature's miracle for sure. Our puppy was super easy to potty train but still had a few accidents. And save some of their food to give as treats instead.

Good luck. The first few months are hard but it gets easier.

Crate that doubles as a travel crate (that fits in your car). Chewy.com has good inexpensive ones. The collapsible ones with two doors and removable pan are the most versatile. Most come with a divider for puppies. You can buy a plush bed to put inside, and cover with a large towel, blanket or sheet if the puppy prefers a warm dark den for the night.

Puppy coat for middle of the night potty breaks or cold days, if the breed isn’t adapted to cold.

Puppy harness to avoid pulling on his neck.

Lots of chew toys specifically for puppies. Supervise because some fabric or rope ones are torn apart rapidly and their parts shouldn’t be swallowed.

+ 1 on the crate. Look for the kind that allow you to partition off a smaller area when puppy is little. If your floor plan allows you to gate offa part of the house to limit puppy range, gates are definitely worth it.

To start you need a crate with a bed (adjustable ideally so you can make it small to start), food, enzyme cleaner for accidents, and a couple toys.

Also, clear your schedule for the next 2-4 weeks. You're not going to get much done with the constant potty breaks! Don't give the puppy the opportunity to have accidents inside for the first couple weeks and your future self will thank you.

Crate or expen for any time you cannot watch puppy, enzymatic cleaner, licky mats with suction cups (fabulous for sticking to bathtub walls for bathing or grooming), leash/collar/harness, a list of places doing monitored puppy playdates and a reservation to start basic puppy kindergarten training.
