I’d probably spend $47 for a 2-year old car rather than $55 for a new one. I buy with cash, so $8k is $8k I can invest. Taxes and insurance would be lower too. I guess the answer is us cheap-os.

I think you are comparing fully loaded used car Vs bare minimum before add on new car.

We just bought a new car because the new version of the model we wanted was the exact same price as the 2018 model. We were dumbfounded to discover that we could have brand new for the same price as used. The dealership had just received a delivery so we had 5 colors to choose from.

I just bought a used car this past summer & paid waaay too much money for it.

However due to the chip shortage issue - I really had no other option.

Buying a car, new or used in today’s market is akin to a second form of hell. 👹

OP I was wondering the same. I planned on buying used but after some price comparisons just bought new. I think it’s either a habit or some models aren’t available new.

Over 100 new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokees Ls at the dealership I was just at.

I think its more of an excuse and people don't negotiate. I got 8.25 off invoice off my Jeep but I custom ordered it.

They are not more than new. They are more than they were when new. I paid $24k for new 2.5 years ago. Now the same car with more miles is $27.5k. A new car is $29K.

I mean, this is only a problem right now.

Normally, the 2-3 year old model with 30k miles will cost 20% less than the new car. Plus a lot of people finance cars and are not looking at the sticker price but the monthly cost, and knocking 10k or more off the sticker price can make that more manageable.

It's just that right now used cars are super rare and it's driven the cost of them all way up. So right now, I'd just buy the new car.

Or, I'd just wait a year or two to buy a car to see if the situation on used cars improves. If it does, then I can get an almost-new car at a pretty good discount from MSRP. And if it doesn't, I'll buy a new car. I don't finance cars ever so that doesn't factor in for me.

New cars are marked up too. So the delta is the same as it ever was.

Because the used car is available to drive home today.

Does it have something to do with financing, as in, is it tougher to qualify for financing a new car?

SUV is $55K brand new. Yet used ones for sale for $55K to $50K. Even with usual $3K negotiation room in used price, who in the world are used at that price appealing to?

Unless you have truly terrible credit, the opposite is true.

Yes, I know used values are obscene right now. But my point is they're so high, you might as well buy new. So why isn't everyone just buying new?
