Just wanted to add that DH and I have been on many a plan, same and different and when one of us switched to a new job IF coverage was always one of the first HR questions we would ask and we would opt in/out accordingly based on who has the most.

This is all good to know! He has (we have in 2021) GEHA, but I have the option for Anthem BCBS so it seems like we can switch just me to take advantage of the IVF coverage. Seems like GEHA is likely to cover some of his labs too from what I'm reading in other threads.

Thanks for your help, keeping our fingers crossed that it works!

Nope, pick the best plan. You can always switch him over to your plan. We choose for price/best plan.

PP here and I meant to add: good luck. I'm so sorry about your recurrent miscarriages. That's really hard. FWIW I ultimately ended up using a gestational carrier because I couldn't carry to term and that process was not as difficult as I thought it would be when all is said and done, just in case that becomes a consideration. I don't feel like it's talked about much, so wanted to say that. But very likely you'll have success with traditional IVF; it's amazing what they can do these days. We were with SG and had a good experience (so far as one can say that for something like this). Sending you lots of good wishes!

My husband and I have always been on separate insurance plans, including during all our infertility treatments. It didn't matter at all. You're right that most costs are going to be yours, but his insurance will cover his bloodwork and maybe some of the other testing depending on his coverage.

Switching insurance to one that offers some coverage makes sense, and even better if it'll cover any of the prescription costs. We paid everything out of pocket and the drug costs were the worst!

Switch over for yourself. Make sure SG takes your insurance first.

We're looking at IVF after recurrent miscarriage, we have a consult scheduled with SG but my employer's benefits open season ends before the consult happens.

We're currently both on his Fed employee insurance, so no IVF coverage. My employer offers infertility coverage up to $25k. We're thinking of switching just me over to my employer's insurance plan, while he would stay on his existing insurance for 2022. If the IVF coverage isn't impacted, this would be considerably cheaper than switching both of us to my employer's insurance.

Anyone gone through IVF when you and your spouse are on separate insurance plans? Has it caused any issues? Is anything even billed to the male partner other than things like genetic testing?
