I agree with you if the gift is opened at the event.

If I go to your house, and you give me a gift to take home and put under the tree, or to open on my birthday, then I will thank you when you hand it to me and then again by phone call, or in writing once I've opened it. This is especially true for something like a card where you're at least pretending you don't know there's cash.

Let’s just say someone hands me a gift as an adult. I say thank you as I physically take it. Then I open the gift, I then say thank you again and say I love it, or will use it shortly, it’s just what I needed, how useful it is etc etc……..

this. They said a generic thank you when handed the card. They should have them said thank you again when they saw the gift was cash inside. If that opened the cards at home they should have written a note or texted or something. But IMO cards should be opened ifo the person.

An in-person thank you is fine if the present is opened in person. It sounds like your kids didn’t do that. Your MIL shouldn’t have been rude though.

I make my kids write thank you notes, but there’s a good chance they wouldn’t have gotten to it within a week of the visit, so her jumping all over it so soon definitely would have annoyed me.

I would be annoyed, too. That said, my kids send written thank you notes to their grandparents and no one else - different generation, different expectations.

I would probably be all sweet and say, “oh, maybe you forgot - they thanked you at dinner last week!” Short and sweet. It won’t make her nice but won’t feed her rage.

My family had dinner with the Grandparents last week, they gave the grandkids cards for Birthday which was a few days ago, kids thanked them for the cards at dinner but did not open them. Just got an aggressive email from MIA telling me the kids needed to "at least" thank them for the cash in the cards. Grandparents did not call kids on B day. Am I being ridiculous by letting this annoy me?
