I personally think thank you notes/texts/anything are dumb if the gift was given to you in person and a "thank you" was said during the exchange. It's almost never genuine, just going through the motions.
I agree with you if the gift is opened at the event.
If I go to your house, and you give me a gift to take home and put under the tree, or to open on my birthday, then I will thank you when you hand it to me and then again by phone call, or in writing once I've opened it. This is especially true for something like a card where you're at least pretending you don't know there's cash.
