I think a lot of the international students are in the grad programs and in the engineerung college (both grad and undergrad). I don't think the main undergrad part (arts&sciences, agriculture) has a lot of international students. And the feel of the campus activities is definitely not worldly or diverse or international. Iowans are not known for being open-minded (was born ther, grew up there, graduated from ISU). Humble, yes. Pleasant, yes. But not too comfortable with other cultures. That said, it is a true "college experience" with tsilgating, a big central campus lawn, lots of activities, etc.

Glad she’s applying to Michigan State. Its hospitality school is incredible. My roommate freshman year, who is still a dear friend, majored in hospitality business and spent summers and junior year at the Disney college program. She’s now an executive there. Good luck OP!

We were in Ames for a couple of days this summer. The campus is very pretty and easy to get around. I preferred it to Univ of Iowa. Ames was fine. How will she get to and from the airport? Will she have a car?

Guarantee that the winters are just as bad in western Massachusetts as in central Iowa. Lived in both.

Has she looked at UNLV? It doesn't get much better in terms of training for hospitality.

Ames is a nice college town. It is way less stressful than this area. My guess is he/she would find people much nicer but maybe less liberal and not as smart (no hate I grew up in Iowa).
Admissions turn around at ISU is so fast. Less than 12 hours and my daughter had an answer.

I should mention that Ames is pretty manageable for getting around. Not nearly as intense as NoVa. She will be more "worldly " than most peers, simply by the exposure to diverse people and ideas here in DMV. It is a safe area, although things happen on any campus.

I graduated from Iowa State. My first question to you: has she visited?

It is a traditional college town, big state U. It is NOT a pretentious school (I also went to UVA for law school, and I would consider UVA to be more pretentious). It IS far away, which makes visiting home less convenient. I knew people in hospitality mngmt when I was there, but it was awhile ago. My friend getting a hotel/restaurant mngmt degree was in my soroity and became the house manager (*which is good experience for that degree).

There are a lot of engineering majors and ag majors. It's Iowa, after all.

Hi was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience with Iowa State. Daughter has sent in most of her EA applications but still feel as if we could look for more colleges. Her intended career path is in hospitality so have been looking at schools with that specific program(ex Cornell, Michigan state, Virginia tech) but want to add more to the list. Iowa state seems affordable out of state but maybe a bit too far and isolated from what she’s used to.
