I have Little House in the Big Woods and Charlotte’s Web on the shelf but not sure if they are too advanced and/or too sad.

+1 My Father’s Dragon
Flat Stanley
Gail Carson Levine’s Princess Tales

I know you want to get away from picture books, but I highly recommend the Quiltmaker books by Jeff Brumbeau. While beautifully illustrated, they are longer, stories with a much higher percentage of text than your average picture book.

Second Zoey and Sassafras! My 4yo DD and 6yo DS both like them.

I remember reading Boxcar Children and the Little House books when I was 6 or so.

I want to mix up our usual books and start adding in some longer books with less pictures. DD is 4 with a vivid imagination and an unaccounted for fear of bears.
