I’m a MD driver. Learned to drive in MD. I use my signal and if the person doesn’t let me in, so what. They’re the rude person. Someone will eventually be kind enough to let me in. And if not, well, my NYC parents are the ones that taught me to drive and I can push my way in if need be.

Overwhelmingly a Maryland driver thing. Apparently signaling is actually optional in Maryland, according to the law. It explains a lot.

Yep. Every place I've lived this is the reason. It seems to be especially worse in morning rush hour traffic, less so other times of the day. It's much easier to sneak in because you if ask for permission with the blinker, the answer is almost always no.

Stop with the hate. I use my turning signals and am a Maryland driver. You on the other hand are a jerk.

A turn signal is a signal for the person in that lane to speed up and block you. The law requires a turn signal. Therefore, I look and make sure it is clear then use my turn signal for one second them change lanes. Safety first!

Outside of the DMV this generally does not happen. People understand you’re going to move in and stay the same speed or slow.

I hate living here sometimes. Inconsiderate people on and off the roads.

The fact that some people are assholes who speed up and cut you off when you signal for a lane change doesn't seem, to me, like a good reason to never signal — at least the assholes still know what you're about to try to do, and for those of us who aren't assholes, it seems far safer to signal than not to. No?

My mom kept not doing that for 200 miles on a trip after lane changes. After awhile she started scowling at me every time I mentioned it on that trip.

To signal a turn or a lane change?

To signal a lane change, it's because if I put my blinker on, the person in the lane I want to go into speeds up to not let me over. This is what I was taught in MD drivers ed, circa 1997.

I was taught to use signals for turns, BUT I was taught you can never trust a blinker, so don't assume oncoming traffic is really making a turn, and opening a space for you.

Maryland driving is not an innate behavior.
