This was my first impression as well. It reminded me a lot of Old Town Alexandria. A little more sprawling than I expected.

I've a feeling you and the pp have never been to Frederick.

It was a staunchly Unionist city during the Civil War. Yes, it was also home to Justice Taney, but that's complicated American history for you.

And it's also rapidly diversifying these days. A significant Latino presence and central Frederick also has an AA population.

Depends on the kid. My 10 yo boy likes the art gallery (on the other side eof the river), pop shop for ice cream or soda, the vintage music store, the silly gift shops, the toy store. We looked up the art trail before we went last time to find different murals and sculptures too.

super cute....lots of quaint shops, vintage, clothing, etc. Lots of places to eat. You could easily spend the day going in and out of shops and trying all kinds of fun snacks, etc.

Very cute. Great shops, especially for furniture and housewares. Good restaurants, ranging from ethnic to excellent BBQ to brew pubs to fancy.

I thought I might take my 12yo DD to Frederick on Saturday to poke around the shops etc. It is her 12th birthday and her celebration with friends is not till the following weekend. I've never been to Frederick. Are there boutiques and little independent shops?
