I don't know if he is on meds but when my son's ADHD meds wear off, I am amazed as to how much food he can consume. Now he is off the meds and eats like a horse. He's 16 so I never saw normal teen boy eating until now. OMG. I'm going to go broke!

You can also control meals and regularizing and modeling healthy but not over the top diet culture eating.

This is hard. The only thing you can really control is what kinds of foods are in the house, helping him to be active, and controlling adhd. Is he on meds? I’ve heard that is helpful when there is a impulsive eating going on as part of the larger impulse control issues.

I really wish school would stop all the food service (breakfast snacks, vending machines, party treats, fast food in the cafeteria, pizza delivery, etc). and focus on one nutritious hot lunch option.

I know it will sound weird but the book How to Nourish Your Child Through an Eating Disorder has a real good food plan with strategies just to normalize eating. Rather than focus on getting rid of all the sugary or processed food, focus on serving 3 balanced and portioned meals a day and 2 snacks. That books gives you guides on building “the plate”. You want your kid to develop a positive physical and mental health relationship with food. Even if they eat outside of the house, focus on what you can do for the times and meals you can.

We are in this spot for our 11 year old. We are just trying to limit the sugar in the house, but still go for a family treat once a week. Keep them moving. Keep offering lots of healthy foods at home.

DS (13) became overweight in a year or so. He is not in the obese category yet. The ped is concerned about the quick weight gain. The ped suggests that we could help DS stabilize his weight (no dieting). As he gets taller, his weight would be fine. How can we help him? We are trying to get rid of all junk food at home, but he could go and buy stuff himself (and he does). I also suspect that he gets breakfast at school (after having breakfast at home) and seconds for lunch. He is active- he does various sports.

Are there any classes he or I can take to learn about healthy eating habits? Any books, or other resources to recommend? He knows that he overeats, but he says he cannot control it. He has ADHD if that’s relevant. Thanks.
